Do/Don't Essay

Let me tell you the best-kept secret about being in states custody. 1. It's a blessing, their are tons of kids in the country, maybe even the world, that would kill for the opportunities we're given. We're fed every day, we get clothes monthly, and all the supply's for a sustainable life. 2. We may be forced to go too school but in the long run you'll appreciate a high school diploma.

Let me give you on the rundown on what should or shouldn't do. While in states custody.

Do: Listen too the people "attempting" to help you. Take their advice to heart apply these things to daily life. Let your proctors, trackers, and program staff get to know you  A lot of them can empathize with you and give you advice.

Don't: Be manipulative, don't sneak around people the last thing you want is too be twisted up in one giant lie. If your honest with what your doing and what's going down life is a lot easier. If your not stressing about something you shouldn't be doing then your not tripping about getting detained.

Do: build relationships, especially with those your in contact with daily or weekly. People such as proctors, trackers, and roommates. Cause if you've got a strong relationship with your "treatment team" they'll go up to bat for you.

Don't: fight every little thing. I know from experience. its not only physically exhausting, also mentally. It can also you into trouble, or just give you a bad attitude. It makes days harder and more stressful if you have a bad attitude.

And finally just do what's need to be done. If you try your best to stay out of trouble and comply with rules. Then your agency to do as you wish is suspended for a minimum amount of time. The sooner you get terminated the sooner you can truly do what you want.

But for the love of all things holy don't fail a drug test or run!!!!! Let's be honest, you've got to have some nerve too fail a drug test when you know your going to be tested. And running, its a waste of your time sooner or later you'll get caught up then either your going to jail or your going back to dt. And starting over at square one.

My favorite thing about your do and don't list is that you shouldn't run or fail a drug test. I don't know from experience, but I have seen people fail drug tests. It only causes them more trouble and more time in the system. I like it because it is totally true and I hope that I never try to run.

Cody I could not agree more about what you said being in states custody. And if you are not manipulative and lying all the time then you know the truth and you don't have to think of new story's to say. Not only should you build relationships with all the people you mentioned you should also build relationships with kids at school so they can stand up for you.

I'm not in or never been in states custody but I really like your Essay. You did A really good job on it. I think it would help kids in custody to read this. Good job.

I have been in and out foster care for a long time and it sucks. I hate not being able to constantly be around my family. Being in custody does have some benefits, yes, but when you've been in for so long and they won't let you out no matter how good you do, then it gets really frustrating and I feel like giving up sometimes. It's a hard thing for me too deal with. I enjoyed your points of view though, and they make a lot of sense!!

I think you did a good job with this. I like how you said "that if you do what you need to do that your treatment team will go to bat for you." That's true because my treatment team has gone all out to help me out and I keep screwing up. Also I like how you said "build relationships with those around you"that is very important in life 'cause everywhere you go you want to build a relationship with someone around you because you need support at least from one person.
